New demos on the way ..some records announced soon…not a lot going on show wise the last couple weeks but plenty of Rebirth bands have things coming up if you haven’t seen
Alex from STEAMROLL came through with a new version of the showcase flyer, siked on how it turned out. If you’ve been waiting to get tix there’s still some up over at fyafest.net along with show flyers and other things I have coming up.
SUICIDE EYES(demo next week I think) played their first show, a couple originals and a Horror Show cover that got the geriatrics off the sidelines and into the pit(where multiple got injured by hitting their brittle bones on each other.) Really siked on this band and I think Ben and the boys doing something that really hasn’t been a Philly style band since my first bands era/Dead By 23 bands existing is a nice change for the area
Also…after weeks of anticipation the world finally got to see WHO REMEMBERS who’s set popped off
My face when I heard From Within CEO Carter Holmes take the Tenfold split as his first pick in the B9 draft…can’t even blame the Alabama school system on that choice the man has demons.Good episode but Cops And Robbers “Execution Style” deserved more love there and online(65 monthly listeners is a crime!!)
The only other show I went to last week was the AMERICAN NIGHTMARE 25 year anniversary presented by $canlon.First and most importantly I finally got to try Chrissy’s pizza…despite how the picture looks it was phenomenal..would go again
Got to the show and was graciously escorted in to escape the frozen hellscape by Mr. S himself.Caught up with Crucial CT Kyle
and assorted other hxc luminaries until Rebirth graduates(now YOUNGBLOODS finest) FACE THE PAIN took the stage. Hit the pit for a few songs, ran into the Minnesota crew who are all top tier moshers and LI legend Hernik(Hernik the zine all time classic) in the pit. Restraining Order got the crowd moving as always, and THE SUICIDE FILE crushed the show which they seem to do everytime I see them. They didn’t play a couple songs I figured they would but lots of good things said during the set and a great reaction.NO WARNING was insane, and Indecision was great as always throwing in the FULL burning fight cover(no more half covers do the whole thing or not at all cmon now.)AN is a band I was obsessed with when the first 7 inches came out and I saw a hundred times with everyone from Sworn Enemy to Lamb Of God to Hatebreed to Striking Distance, as a dumbass sophmore in HS I wore a hoodie of theirs I had gotten the previous week at a show George BL filled in on vocals for them because Wes was sick, down to the city….where I bought an ELLIOT hoodie at a store on south street before going to an Ensign/Catch 22 Movielife(?) show…I put my previously purchased hoodie in a pile my friend Chip(childhood friends with Devon Sawa of Idle Hands fame) promised was “all good” to keep it at.It was not in fact all good and some ska loving checkered shoe wearing piece of shit definitely ended up with it.At some point after I then cowardly became the “all these other kids who don’t actually like hardcore like this band now so I don’t like them” move(probably from the dragging the lake comp) so I missed out on the last couple years of them existing until seeing the OG reunion 15 years ago or whenever it was.All that being said it was a great set and nothing but hits, Wes diving etc. Great show start to finish in spite of one of my least favorite things, the “high school reunion” crowd . Some of the conversations I overheard made me sick to my stomach just out of touch “hey remember when” ass motherfuckers. Whatever, like I said great show
Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the first PUNISHMENT show
I’ve said this a million times at this point but to me this video can stand toe to toe with any Lil Greg mosh video/classic NYHC video etc, it truly might be the best example of Philly moshing and style that exists online. One day i’ll do a double cross webzine level breakdown of every second of the video but it holds up and I show it to anyone I can still.
Everyone moshing is a Street Fighter character level madman who all have their own special moves(Philly rolls..side to side style..brutal kicking directly into the dick)The anniversary got me thinking about the first time I ever saw Punishment which was a show at my local middle school which had a ton of shows(punk rock proms, AN/Death Threat all day fest, pretty much something every weekend where no matter who was playing 300 people would be there, also where I did my first abomination of a show when i was 15.)I’m not sure who else was on but it was for sure S.E.E.D.(nor cal band I believe), one of the first handful of Punishment shows, one of the first Shattered Realm shows when they only had the demo, maybe a couple more. The first thing I see when I walk in was Joe HxC, who obviously scared the shit out of me as a kid.He had what I thought was a crazy stabbing scar on his neck and his at the time( in my head) classic headband on.From that show/set on I loved them and always loved seeing them whenever I could, places like Funrama or random shows for them to be on like the Hands Tied reunion in the burbs with the First Step and some others or the infamous YOT reunion set etc.Joe and Damian(also horrifying to me as kid when I knew if you had a Cold As Life jersey you were a legit lunatic, so don’t fuck with you)are doing a zine documenting their time as a band which will be much more in depth but they’ll always be a band that made me scared for my life at their shows but that fear is what kept me coming back.Philly never had much band wise but how many other places had a band where they didn’t have a design for tour so they just spray painted a stencil of one of their guns onto shirts
That’s about it for this one but if you haven’t yet go and get a GET WISE ZINE
love the random graffiti guy art throughout it and the zines/articles are dope.
I knew this day would come but we’re seemingly already at people complaining there’s too much “regular hardcore”and it needs to be more balanced…the scene has had to endure over a decade of non ironic nu metal or other bullshit shirts and bands so the last thing I’ll ever complain about is too much hardcore that sounds like hardcore. I hope there’s a new demo everyday for the rest of this year, I’ll listen to every single one. Kids are covering WIDE AWAKE, 2025 is great.
